Xing Li (she/her)

My project takes roots from a visit to the Ellis Island Immigration Hospital. Ellis Island consists of an inspection hall and an immigration hospital. When immigrants arrived at the island a hundred years ago, they needed to enter the inspection hall with their luggage. The doctors monitored and sent suspected patients to the immigration hospital. My work is composed of two parts. The first part is painting, inspired by different departments and medical supplies of the hospital itself (deplaning room, tuberculosis and infectious disease isolation room, intensive care unit, corridor of infectious ward, etc.). The entire series of works aims to present this heavy topic with realistic and lyrical ideas. The second part is a short film. It consists of four parts, which reflect the living space of the immigrants from Ellis Island a hundred years ago and the living space of the New Yorkers today. At the same time, there is a driving question throughout the video: Where is the shore? . New Yorkers are physically present in the United States, but where is the other shore? Everyone has a different understanding of the distant shore, and a distant shore is ultimately a yearning for a new life.
